Individuals with severe disabilities face challenges performing normal every-day tasks. Today, researchers are developing a technology that could conceivably alleviate many difficulties associated with physical handicaps.
Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology allows a living, healthy brain to connect to an external computer system through a chip composed of electrodes. The electrode chip can be implanted into defined positions within the motor cortex in order to capture the brain’s natural electric signals that stimulate voluntary movement. Researchers today can record the electrical activity of neurons firing and use computers to convert the signals into actions by applying signal processing algorithms. Significant and intensely competitive research in this field over the past decade, which one scientist has called an "arms race," has led to the first human BCI implantation surgery directed by Brown University professor, John Donoghue.
On June 22, 2004, Professor Donoghue’s team implanted an electrode into Matthew Nagle’s brain which today has allowed him, after extensive training, to perform activities like opening his email and turning on and off a TV using his thoughts alone. The success of the device has caused excitement in the field and has led many to contemplate the possible applications of BCI’s in the future.
At the same time, however, not everyone is as optimistic as Donoghue about the current technology. Some researchers criticize Donoghue's group for rushing in to human trials when BCIs are still crudely designed. Others see big picture ethical problems that could arise from this new kind of "mind control."
This web page will present developments in the BCI field, especially from within the Donoghue group, exploring what has led to human implantation and information about the surgical procedure itself, how the device translates thoughts into actions, what criticisms others have of BCIs, as well as what the future has in store for BCI technology.

While Donoghue’s recent human implantation shows much promise it has also sparked much controversy from other researchers in the field, mostly led by Duke’s Miguel Nicolelis, and from bioethicists. These issues must be addressed in order for wide use of the technology to become a reality.

Criticism from a research standpoint:

The human trial is a "stunt," says Miguel Nicolelis. Donoghue is more concerned with profits made by his company than overall benefit to the patient and to the research.
The system does not work as well as advertised.
Reading email and turning on a TV does not improve one’s quality of life dramatically .
Other non-invasive methods could produce the same result; more applicability to quality of life is needed to justify surgical intervention.
The electrodes are easily susceptible to obstruction with brain material, thus creating the need for multiple surgeries
Implantation in a human overlooked what some, such as Miguel Nicolelis, believed are essential steps: "I think they skipped a couple of steps to make this ready for humans." Should something go wrong due to the surgery, the entire field would suffer major setbacks.¹

Criticism from an ethical standpoint:

The military could potentially use this technology as a means of creating a superior weapon or designing the “super soldier.” This use could ultimately lead to the demise of more people than it helps
If individuals without a disability attempt to use this technology to alter current abilities and senses, the device would create greater disparity among individuals. This use would raise issues related to cost and who has access to health care.
Abuse of this technology could potentially threaten the privacy and autonomy of individuals if this technology is used to “read” someone else’s mind and possibly even control another human being like a robot.

Analysis:
This technology has shown a great deal of promise in whom it can help and what it can do. There is a potentially large patient population available and in addition, simple communication and control capabilities can be beneficial for those with severe motor disabilities. Donoghue's current trial shows that it can and does work. In order to create a more complete understanding, one must consider the drawbacks and challenges. The design needs additional development and further progress to create a more patient-friendly product. Ethically, a number of issues to explore and discuss exist. This technology has the potential of helping a large number of individuals and at the same time, if it were to be used beyond the purpose of its design, it would have a significantly negative impact on society as a whole. Realistically, at this point, the more immediate benefits of the technology outweigh the potential for misuse.

John Donoghue, when asked about whether or not brain-computer interfaces will open the door to mind control:
"We do that all the time already. Advertising is mind control. Even pharmaceutical agents are a form of mind control. When people have behaviors that deviate extremely far from the norm, they are given medications that bring their mind back into the realm of behavior that we call normal. So we do it now. If a child were to have a seizure, and we controlled his mind so that he didn't have seizure, that would be a wonderful thing. We want to do that.

The things I have experienced for some time now are hard to believe. Star like object following me everywhere I go. I see shadow like movement them become dizzy and sick to my stomach, My vision becomes so blurry I cant read. I see purple at shadows at night, it makes lights around me larger then they are which make it extremely difficult to drive, The damage it has caused is unreal.. This kind of cruelty should be a concern for all.

I have been a victim of satellite spying for approx. 5 yrs. now, and I want all other victims to know that it's not you, and your not alone. I have been tracked, followed, tormented by the voices, cursed shocked and made to scratch by itching sensations, food poisoned w/ sotmach growls/ frequent B.M.'s(usually diahrrhea), ridiculed, threatened, and belittled by these satellite home invaders who are locked on to me 24/7. I'm very relieved that I have found others who can relate/agree with me.Some of the voices are known, and others are not, but none are friendly.Some of them are local, and others are from 2 known CA cities.They watch every thing I do on both computer and cell phones. I have no privacy, and they use this device to put object in my mouth, food or other places. Ican get a bad taste in my mouth from nowhere at anytime. They also like to play games, for example, when I go outside, a lot of cars speed by the house with their cell phones in view, I guess to let me know they're staring. I'm not mentally ill and this is not imagined. Please respond or help.

Again I have to ask, why? Satellite surveillance is completely covert. Those under surveillance by satellites have absolutely no way to know.The satellites RECEIVE an image. They do not broadcast to the target of the surveillance. Yes, they do broadcast, but it is an extremely weak signal that requires a parabolic dish to pick up.
You would feel the effects of surveillance satellites the same as DirecTV, ie: not at all.
It may well be that someone is harassing you and it may or may not include the use of satellite surveillance. But the harassment would be completely separate from the satellite.

WOW, I'm sorry but is this even possible from a home computer, you know, to actually link up to a satellite in space and then actually be able to take control of a multi-billion dollar piece of equipment just so some guy can look down at some thing or some one (stalker, pervert, est...)? 1st. i was all ways under the impression that just moving a satellites to a certain spot is very expensive and time consuming. 2nd. letting anyone have control of something that to develop a sat. with such technology would probably put the tally in the billions, then another billion to make something from nothing, another billion to send it up into space and finally another billion or so to move it around and have some fun (like a new car, fully loaded with all the cool gadgets. for the first week, none stop, every day, all day i'd be playing my buttocks off!! but wait, now that I'm finished let me share with the world? lol, ya right!!!)!!! I'm sorry but there's no way they would let any tom dick or even yes, harry have excess to something that's probably very valuable and precious to them!!! Has anybody thought of how a satellite could be used to spy on the American citizens? I went to a popular site today to get driving directions and I noticed that I could get a satellite view of where I was going.Not only could I get a view I could zoom in and out. I was very surprised how clear the picture was. Now think about this, this is the civilian model imagine what the military can see!! This scares the heck out of me.
I bet they could see right through the walls and into your house. I would really hate to know what they could really do with them.

I personally am impressed with the technology we have today. In AMERICA, and it does not scare me, I wish I knew how to hook up to a satellite that would allow me to watch traffic in any AMERICAN city, live! I would tune in from my computer and watch my friends walking through a street down town or watch just about anything, really. Yes, even pay to have this service. and listen to them, live! this would be awesome, but were to find this service, I would not even know where to begin to search.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had some type of radar device in a few military satellites for peering through walls on the ground.. probably something like beaming microwaves at objects and observing the reflections...reminds me....I was working for a company one time that was trying to commercialize Ultra-wide band radios (UWB).... but, apparently this technology was initially developed by the military as a portable radar that can see through walls... and its turns out that this property of going easily through walls makes it good for use as a radio as well... it goes through the walls without out being significantly attenuated and its difficult to detect because it can operate at extremely low power... it would look just like white noise to the observers... one the downside, you can't transmit very far with it because the FCC doesn't allow transmission above a certain noise threshold because it spreads the energy all over the spectrum, including channels that are occupied by narrow band devices...

It's not impossible for such things to be created with the technology that we have today. May be its out there how do you think google earth was made. They just have to make a better version of the satellite who made the shots for Google earth. This is science fiction of the past but now I won't be surprised if it will be real.

On May 6, 2008, I mailed a complaint to you regarding severe violation of the Patriot Act, which included torture, human rights, civil rights and civil liberty violations and government waste, false claims, fraud and abuse, violation of color of law, abuse of power, destruction of property, identity theft. Also related to the Patriot act I was a victim of false arrest and malicious prosecution (I have never committed any crimes). On June 17, 2009 a police officer stated that I am “Redlined.” Mr. Fine I fear for my life.
I have tried numerous times to contact you to find out the status of my complaint, however my mail, including email is being blocked and I have resulted to filing a complaint regarding my mail with the US Court of Federal Claims, Case No: 09-337-C against the United States Postal Service.
I am tortured daily – microwaving and infrasound - and there are others in Kentucky also being abused and tortured by these satellite and radio frequency weapons, etc. We “Fear for our Lives.”
I am resending the complaint to you and it is against the following:
1) The U.S. Dept of Justice in Louisville, Kentucky (David Huber)
2) The Louisville Metro Police Department (Chief White)
3) The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Louisville, Kentucky (Mr. Cox)
4) Homeland Security, Louisville, Kentucky
Please contact me immediately, as there are others being tortured, tormented, property destroyed, jobs destroyed, monitored in their homes and redlined in Kentucky and we need Washington to intervene. What is being done to us is equivalent to hate crime activity. To keep anyone from assisting us some of the Officials are telling everyone that we have mental problems; I know this because some of the people they have made these false claims to have told me and others what they have stated. For the record I have never had any mental problems, I have never been on any medication or in any hospitals.
This is a false claim and a tool used by officials to discredit the victim and due to the fact that an official is making the statement the official is believed while they torture, torment and violate the victim. In even experiencing all of this I and others are still fighting for our rights and willing to publicly disclose this corruption. Mr. Fine, there are also numerous questionable deaths in Kentucky.

I do believe that i was a victim of surveillance satellite spying. I had to tolerate voices and pictures that no one else could see or hear except me. It started with pictures of my ex boyfriends family and i could hear them talking to me. The voices were telling me that they were going to hurt my children and the reason they were doing these things to me was because they wanted me to stay away from their son. I left and moved in with my father and for the next 4 years. They still bothered me. I had to listen to voices 24/7. the illusions stopped for awhile but alot of the times would come back. I know the people that were behind this but i can't proove it. My family thinks it's not possible. I didn't know where to go with this problem. I wanted to go to the sherrifs office, but got scarred of the cops not believing in me and thinking i'm crazy, so instead i just went to the hospital.I've been diagnosed with zophrenia. I just got brave enough to tell my doctor everything that they were telling me so maybe if they ever decide to harm me for real, at least someone knows that i wasn't making all of this up. Still the doctor just thinks it was a medical condition. I know with all my heart and soul and only God is my witness that i was being spyed on. I had no privacy anywhere. I really wish and I have prayed that there was someone that could help me. I would love to see those people get punished for what they done to me.Because of that.I have no friends anymore. And they got away with it because i can't proove anything. The voices did finally stop but 7 months later, they started back up. It has been 3 months since i've heard any voices. But just because you don't hear them, doesn't mean they're not watching. i constantly hear voices which i cant define where its coming from.I thought i was schizophrenic, but i have a strong feeling where its coming from on who did this to me.So i made a few researches onlineand there i found it!you see, i used to live in the USA where i picked this up.I used to mingle with some people who is involved in lot of illegal dealings.And now that im home in the philippines i can still hear their voices.

HI i am being spyed on 24/7 by my neighbours i hear thier voices all the time and they follow me whereever i go.I have recieved medical treatment for hearing voices but have not respopnded to it, why ? because i am being mentally abused, by them using some form of satillite survellance and physically i feel a burning sensation at times on my body which i believe they are also doing.The police in the uk will not do anything because like everyone else they think it is all in my head and that i am going mad.i am 100%sure i am being targeted by satillite survallence, and would like to know where i can obtain any advice on this issue
